L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Département 84

Incontournable !
L'Isle-sur-la-SorgueThe Comtadin Venice…

Built on woodpiles, streams, and canals, L’Isle sur la Sorgue is a refreshing oasis in the provençal summer. As you stroll along the canals, you will enjoy the charm of the town’s narrow and ancient streets. Don’t miss the “water divide.” about one kilometer upstream from town; here the stream divides itself into two parts, forming a quiet pond where plane trees and bountiful green foliage are reflected. Paddle wheels remind the town of its past as a textile industry place.

The sumptuous decoration of the collegiate church Notre Dame des Anges, with its paintings from the Mignard brothers, Sauvran and Parrocel, reveals a prosperous time in the town’s history. Today, L’Isle sur la Sorgue shelters in its poetic landscape some very interesting markets (do not miss the floating market during the first Sunday of August) and antique fairs, which have given the town both national and international visibility. The antique fairs of Easter and August 15th welcome 500 exhibitors in addition to the 7 permanent antique-dealer villages.
L’isle sur la Sorgue is also the birthplace of poet Rene Char. The Donadei de Campredon House sells souvenirs and organizes exhibitions about some of his friends who were also great artists.
