In the Pays de Sault, Monieux clings to the steep cliffs of the last foothills of the Gorges de La Nesque. This is the starting point for numerous hikes which explore the gorges. In the village, you will discover several very ancient houses, some even going back to the middle-ages. A medieval watch-tower from the 12th century overlooks the area and connects the village to the remains of the primitive enclosure. You can end your hike with a visit to the three chapels: Saint Andre, Saint Roch and Saint Michel.
Look up and you will see the “roucas dou cire” or wax rock, which overlooks the road from 200 meters above. Named for the wild bees that turned it into an enormous rock. It is said that in the old days, people would hang off to long ropes to collect the honey covering the rock.
