Vaucluse is the smallest “département” of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Region. It borders the Gard, Ardèche, Drôme, Alpes de Haute-Provence, Var and Bouches-du-Rhône « départements ».
It is often considered as the place where the heart of Provence beats.
This part of Provence offers a wide variety of landscapes: sculpted mountains (Mont Ventoux 1912m, Dentelles de Montmirail, Monts de Vaucluse et Montagne du Luberon), vast plains and green hills where illustrious vineyards have prospered for hundreds of years; Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel, Beaumes de Venise…
Vaucluse receives 2800 hours of sun per year and the Mistral wind strengthens the luminosity. Vaucluse is a very fertile land. It is a land of ochre and lavender, crystallized fruits and wine. It is one of the main producers of cantaloupe melons, cherries or grapes in France, and the first producer of truffles. This agricultural trade helped preserve the environment and art de vivre.
The famous land of Luberon, with its castles, villages, and abrupt landscapes, is located in the southern part of Vaucluse. The Luberon’s environment has been well preserved, with its huge forests, cliffs of ochre, and a Natural Park which spreads on 67 towns.
Further north, the Sorgues region is truly a refreshing oasis. L’Isle sur la Sorgue with its many canals, will please all antiques lovers and admirers of beautiful objects and art galleries; this little town has almost 300 antique dealers!
In High Vaucluse you will find another part of Provence that has remained preserved, and a rich history in the towns of Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine, surrounded by a dense vegetation of oak and pine forests. The Dentelles de Montmirail, with its high peaks sculpted by erosion, will please the rock-climbers.
The Ventoux, Comtat Venaissin / Land of Sault is one of the highlights of Provence. Overlooking all of Provence from its 1912 meters and mentioned by the 14th century poet Petrarch, the Mount Ventoux is an exceptional natural site, designated a “Biosphere Reserve” by UNESCO. Hikes, mountain bike rides, Roman chapels, Jewish heritage, fountains, authenticity, terroir products, lavender fields,… you will be delighted by the abundance this site has to offer.
Avignon, capital of the Cotes du Rhone, is a city of history and arts. The reign of the Popes marked the architecture: you will discover the famous “Pont d’Avignon,” a 12th century bridge. Behind the well kept “remparts” (walls circling around the city) is the medieval city and the Palace of the Popes, designated a UNESCO “World Heritage” site. Stroll in the old alleys, visit the museums, and in July, come visit the capital of performing arts and its world famous Theater Festival.
See you soon in Vaucluse!
